A Perfumer's right of choice

Thats it!!! I have had enough of the constant aggressive/defensive attitude perfumers take about their craft and which practice of perfumery is better. If you truly are a perfumer you will recognize the artistic and creative processes that are involved in producing any work. You will also respect another's choice of medium and expression through said medium and the work it produces. A great perfume is a great perfume, regardless of its ingredients or methods of creation. A terrible perfume is also a terrible perfume, regardless of how it was made or what it was made from. There are terrible perfumers using all sorts of ingredients badly and there are beautiful perfumes that utilize naturals, botanicals, animal ingredients, natural synthetics and a combinations of each or all.

Some people/perfumers need to just get over themselves and accept this truth.

Perfumes should be diverse and created with a range of materials depending on how you best find your expression in the art. But how can it be if we are all supposed to follow one method and set of ingredients??? How utterly dull that those who use 'synthetics' think they have the right to feel superior over those who use 'naturals'.

It is also fantastically boring that those who use naturals can not seem to accept or appreciate those who use synthetics.

I understand we have our reasons for using the materials we do but are we activists or creators of perfume??????

I choose to use botanicals- I like their complexity and changeable nature and I appreciate their depth and the skill required to tease out their many layers and lay them bare. I refuse to use animal products-I dont like them and dont require them in my work. I also 'personally' dont see the need to use synthetics as they currently dont work for me both in scent and as a medium.

So What????

I am not selling that message-I sell perfume.

Does this make me inferior or superior? NO

This just means I am exercising my artistic freedoms and rights to create what I consider to be beautiful and stimulating works.

Do I judge others by what they use? NO

So many perfumers cant isolate the difference between personal taste judgements and respectful assessment of another's choices to express their creativity. I dont like Chanel no. 5 ( GASP sin of sins) but I appreciate it for what it is as a perfume and why it has the reputation it does. I expect the same respect from other perfumers of my works.

I will not be party this 'them vs us' attitude from anyone anymore. It is this kind of infighting and backbiting that makes a joke of those of us who are perfumers and practice the art of perfumery. I would never begrudge anyone the use of a medium to express their creativity and I demand the same from others. Take your art seriously and invest your passion into your creation so that it can speak for itself. I am completely comfortable in my choices and embrace my craft and my perfumes speak for themselves and through those who share my joy in what they are. I dont need to convince others to follow me and my choices.
